Research Work

The Department of International Finance is a distinguished unit at Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman, dedicated to research in international financial relations, international investment, and the interdisciplinary challenges associated with global financial development. This department emphasizes interdisciplinary research concerning Ukraine’s journey toward European integration and its effective incorporation into the global financial landscape.

For over 20 years, the faculty members of the Department of International Finance have explored a wide array of topics in their dissertations and scholarly publications. These topics include international finance, Islamic finance, the global financial market, business models for the advancement of international companies, transnationalization, international settlements, and the corporate and investment strategies of multinational corporations. Additionally, the department investigates areas such as public finance, corporate finance, and sustainable development.

Professors in the Department are distinguished members of prominent domestic and international scientific organizations and are recognized for their groundbreaking research in economics, finance, and business. This includes memberships in the International Academy of Business and Economics and the International Atlantic Economic Society. Their research findings are published in esteemed scientific journals indexed in leading scientometric databases such as Scopus and the Web of Science Core Collection. Additionally, these findings are presented at international conferences, integrated into corporate practices, and submitted to governmental authorities for consideration in regulatory frameworks.

The Department of International Finance actively engages in research initiatives at various levels, which include international studies supported by grant agreements, research funded by the Ministry of Education and Science, contract-based economic research, and independent projects. Notably, over the last five years, the department has undertaken a project titled “Modeling the Development of International Economic and Financial Cooperation of Ukraine with the Countries of the Middle East and North Africa,” commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (state registration number 0119U001302, 2019-2021, scientific supervisor D.G. Lukyanenko, funding amount - 1,046,772 thousand UAH). Also during this period, the Department provided practical recommendations related to three economic contracts: Agreement No. 1012/19 dated December 10, 2019; Agreement No. 20/20-g dated August 31, 2020; and Agreement No. 22/20-g dated August 10, 2020, with a total funding amount of 112,000 UAH. Additionally, the department conducted scientific research as part of two initiative research projects: “Global Economic Integration: Strategic Motivations, Formats, and National Interests” (No. 0116U001387) and “Global Economic Development in the Context of the Formation of a Digital Society” (No. 0121U114086).

As of 2025, the Department of International Finance collaborates with several foreign universities: (1) SGH Warsaw School of Economics (Poland), (2) Corvinus University (Hungary), (3) Prague University of Economics and Business (Czech Republic), (4) University of Economics in Bratislava (Slovakia), (5) University of Tartu (Estonia), and (6) Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania). This collaboration is part of grant agreement No. BNI/PST/2023/1/00147/U/00001. The focus of this grant agreement is "Academic Partnership for the Study of the Middle East and North Africa in Central and Eastern Europe." The duration of the grant is 24 months, starting from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2026.

Since 2021, the faculty of the department has been investigating various contemporary issues as part of the interdepartmental research initiative titled "Global Economic Development in the Context of the Formation of a Digital Society."

The department's lecturers have published approximately 500 scientific papers, including 12 monographs in the following areas:

1. Global institutionalization of the financial market.

2. The innovative component of national financial market development in the context of a digital society.

3. Transnational capital in global financial markets.

4. Islamic finance and its role in sustainable economic development.

5. Management of international financial markets.

6. Forecasting trends in key segments of the world financial market.

7. Global FX market within the paradigm of economic globalism.

8. Reconfiguration of the world financial system.

In addition to their research, the department's lecturers actively participate in various international conferences, symposiums, seminars, and round tables. They publish in reputable domestic and foreign journals and are members of both domestic and international scientific organizations.

The department actively engages in scientific research alongside students, providing exemplary supervision of their academic projects across various courses within their specializations. This organizational structure fosters meaningful and enduring relationships between promising individuals and the department. By facilitating this form of scientific collaboration, the department enhances communication with industry partners and enables the prompt resolution of matters related to students’ practical training at specific enterprises.

In recent years, the Department has observed a favourable trend in the ratio of applicants to postgraduate studies compared to graduates. Over the past six years, one doctoral dissertation and seven candidate dissertations have been successfully defended. Currently, five faculty members are diligently working on their doctoral dissertations.
