Brief description of the lecture:
A derivative is a financial instrument whose value depends on changes in the value of an underlying object, such as other assets, instruments or indices. Derivatives are a means of risk management in a company, but can also be used by investors to speculate and increase risks. Financial derivatives are often cited as the cause of the 2008 global financial crisis. In this lecture, you will learn the basics of derivatives, the main concepts and characteristics, and how they can be used in business risk management.

Charles K. Whitehead - some facts about his professional life:
 
Charles K. Whitehead is the Myron K. Taylor Professor of Business Law at Cornell Law School and the founding director of the Law, Technology and Entrepreneurship Program at Cornell Institute of Technology.
 
Professor Whitehead specializes in legal matters relating to business organizations, capital markets, financial institutions, mergers and acquisitions, and complex financial transactions. He previously held the position of a research associate at Columbia University, and in 2006 joined the faculty of the Boston University School of Law. In 2009, he began teaching at Cornell University Law School.
 
Professor Whitehead is the co-author of one of the leading manuals on securities market regulation in the United States. He is the author of numerous publications, including in Columbia Law Review, Georgetown Law Journal, Cornell Law Review, Boston University Law Review, Ohio State Law Journal, Journal of Corporate Law, Delaware Journal of Corporate Law and Harvard Business Law Review.
 
Professor Whitehead was the first foreign expert, a visiting professor at the Faculty of Law at Peking University, as well as a researcher at the Financial Research Center of the University. Goethe. He is the only American who received an honorary doctorate from the National Law University named after Yaroslav the Wise in Ukraine.
 
Prior to his academic career, Professor Whitehead held senior positions in the global financial services industry, practicing in New York and Tokyo, including serving as Managing Director of Nomura Securities International, Salomon Brothers and Citigroup. He was the first director of Citigroup in Japan, chairman of Citigroup's corporate bank in Japan and chief operating officer of Citigroup's investment bank in Japan.
 
In Ukraine, Professor Whitehead founded eō Business Incubators, a leading incubator for the development of startups. He is the deputy chairman of the Ukrainian Startup Fund (founded by the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine), which provides grants to technology companies in the early stages of development.
 
Professor Whitehead is a Fellow of the American Law Institute and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Worked as a legal advisor to Ellsworth A. Van Graafeiland (US Court of Appeals (2nd Circuit). He is a graduate of Columbia Law School, where he received the Harlan Fiske Stone and James Kent Scholarships, and Cornell University, from which he graduated with honors (magna cum laude).
