Department of Foreign Languages and Intercultural CommunicationThe Department of Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication provides fundamental language training of students. The process of teaching foreign languages is closely linked to the nature of their future professional activity and, in accordance with pan -European recommendations on language education developed by the Council of Europe, is aimed at forming students of foreign communicative competence at the level of independent user; Understanding the concept of intercultural communication and awareness of its importance for doing modern business. High-quality language training for students in today's challenging conditions is impossible without the use of innovative educational technologies, methods, and approaches. In foreign language learning, information and communication technologies, project-based work, educational computer and multimedia programs, distance learning technologies, the creation of presentations in the Microsoft PowerPoint software environment, and the use of various Internet resources are employed. These technologies help implement a student-centered approach to learning, ensuring individualization and differentiation of education based on students' abilities and knowledge levels. Modern teaching methods such as the case method, role-playing games, project-based techniques, and discussions of problem situations are actively used. These methods contribute to the development of students' innovative thinking and innovative approaches to professional activities. HistoryThe history of the department began in 1992 when it was separated from the university-wide Department of Foreign Languages. Over the following years, the department has trained thousands of highly qualified bachelors in international economics, international business, and international economic relations with proficiency in English, French, and Spanish. The department's faculty members provide: ➢ Educational support at the "Bachelor," "Master," and "Doctor of Philosophy" levels for all forms of study. ➢ Instruction in courses such as: "Foreign Language (English, French)," "Business Foreign Language (English, French)," "Foreign Language for Special Purposes (English)," "Second Foreign Language (English, French, Spanish)," "Second Language for Beginners (French)," "Intercultural Communication," and "Foreign Language for Academic Purposes." ➢ Implementation of joint international projects and certification programs in collaboration with partner universities, including the University of Redlands and the State University of New York at Potsdam (USA), as well as the University of Reading and Henley Business School (UK).
The mission of the department is to train highly qualified specialists in international economics, international business, international economic relations, and international financial relations who can communicate effectively in a multicultural environment and work in an international context. This requires the development of competencies such as: ➢ The ability to engage in professional and academic communication with foreign partners, utilizing appropriate linguistic and speech norms, sociocultural knowledge, skills, and abilities that enable flexible adaptation of language behavior depending on the communication context. ➢ The ability of future professionals to work in multinational teams, using linguistic tools appropriately according to the goals and frameworks of professional interaction. ➢ The ability to avoid conflicts arising from intercultural differences. ➢ The skill to position themselves as full-fledged, competitive participants in the international labor market. The primary goal of the department is to develop professionally oriented foreign language training for students, which is understood as relevant behavior in both verbal and non-verbal aspects of linguistic and speech activity. This, in turn, enhances the sense of national self-identity within the context of globalization processes. he department's objectives include: ➢ Expanding the teaching and methodological base and enhancing educational potential. ➢ Improving the effectiveness and quality of scientific, methodological, and educational work in accordance with national education standards and legislation. ➢ Applying best international practices and aligning with European standards for language education. ➢ Integrating innovative technologies, methods, and approaches into foreign language teaching.
The principles guiding the department's development are: ➢ Continuous professional development and ongoing self-improvement of faculty members. ➢ Teaching foreign languages based on an interdisciplinary and integrative approach. ➢ Systematic integration of information and communication technologies into the educational process. ➢ Developing competency-based models for academic programs. ➢ Individualizing the learning process to create conditions for each student's self-fulfillment. ➢ Encouraging students’ motivation for independent improvement of their language and communication skills through modern information and communication technologies. ➢ Fostering students' development based on universal cultural and spiritual values. In recent years, the department has been actively engaged in research projects related to various aspects of intercultural communication. A scientific study on the topic "Challenges and Prospects of Intercultural Communication in the Context of Global Economic Integration" has been completed as part of the faculty-wide research initiative "Global Economic Integration: Strategic Motivations, Formats, and National Interests" at the Faculty of International Economics and Management. Additionally, work has begun on a new research project titled "Multiculturalism in the Global Language Education Space," with a particular focus on the section "Global Issues of Multiculturalism and the Dialogue of Cultures in the Information Society" (see the "Research Activities" section). Together with other language departments of the Faculty of International Economics and Management, the department organizes and hosts the annual International Conference "Strategies for Intercultural Communication in Language Education at Modern Universities." One of the department’s key priorities is engaging students in research activities, which is a crucial component of training highly qualified specialists.
The forms of student research activities include: • Participation in various types of in-class academic work involving scientific research. • Organization of student research paper competitions. • Hosting student Olympiads. • Conducting student research within academic clubs. • Participation in scientific and practical conferences, seminars, webinars, and other events. • Individual mentorship of student researchers by faculty members. The department's efforts have yielded positive results, as evidenced by the achievements of its students, who have repeatedly won prizes in the second stage of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in English and French, as well as in international professional competitions such as Idea Fest, ENACTUS Ukraine, and the CFA Institute Research Challenge.
