Faculty of International Economics and Management

Department of Business Linguistics

The Department of Business Linguistics, a structural unit of the Faculty of International Economics and Management, has a crucial mission. We aim to enhance the native language competence of future competitive specialists in both domestic and international labor markets. This mission is significant as it directly contributes to our graduates' professional success and global competitiveness.

The Department of Business Linguistics stands out with its unique approach to native language education. Our educational activities are designed to foster students' personal and professional growth, nurture patriots who recognize the role of language as a key factor in national security, and establish the status of the Ukrainian language as the cultural and corporate code of KNEU. A significant achievement of our educational approach has been the development of a model of native language education in a non-specialized university. This model integrates Ukrainian studies, linguistic culture of (modern) business communication, Ukrainian for media professionals, culture of political language, linguistic culture of a lawyer, language of business communication, public speaking, copywriting, business linguistics, the art of presentation, linguistic design in scientific research (for doctoral students), Ukrainian-language education for international students, and Polish as a foreign language. We support this intercultural vector of language education at the university through promoting Ukrainian-Polish communications and implementing joint projects. A significant methodological achievement of our Department is the teaching of specific courses for students enrolled in English-language programs at the university.
One of the key tasks of higher education is to prepare future professionals who are oriented toward scientific activities and must acquire in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical competencies. Therefore, educational technologies must be open to innovation and rich in scientific content. A teacher, therefore, is a professional, scientist, and researcher. The Department's faculty members have developed original authorial concepts of Ukrainian artistic, media, and professional discourses, considering national and cross-cultural components of diverse communication styles. A notable professional achievement of the Department, resulting from active scientific collaboration with researchers from other universities, is the publication of two monographs: The Linguistic World of Modern Professional Communication (2022) and Language Educational Technologies in the Dimension of Multiculturalism (2023). This commitment to innovation in educational technologies ensures that our students receive the highest quality of education, preparing them for the challenges of the modern world.
To enhance the scientific and professional qualifications of faculty members and coordinate interdisciplinary research, the Department maintains traditional partnerships with institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (including the Institute of the Ukrainian Language, the Institute of Literature, and the Institute of Linguistics), as well as with higher education institutions such as Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Kyiv National Linguistic University, and the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering, among others.
A key goal of modern higher education is to shape a well-rounded individual capable of scientific thinking and professional decision-making and cultivate a nationally conscious young intellectual — intelligent and proactive. The educational aspect of the Department's work is equally significant, as faculty members, both in and out of the classroom, strengthen the humanitarian component of language education, enhance students' overall cultural level, and humanize the student-teacher dialogue. Students actively engage with their native culture by participating in literary debates, evenings, and national student seminars. In recent years, KNEU students have had the opportunity to meet renowned Ukrainian cultural figures and masters of Ukrainian verbal art. The organization of the initial stages of the International Taras Shevchenko Language and Literature Competition and the International Petro Yatsyk Ukrainian Language Competition reflects a genuine interest among students in socio-humanitarian issues. The Department's role in shaping such well-rounded individuals is a testament to our commitment to not just academic excellence, but also to the holistic development of our students.
The Department's accumulated experience in collaboration provides a solid foundation for its participation in innovative processes initiated at the university, particularly in research institutes that focus on in-depth and active exploration of contemporary economic science. It supports the linguistic aspect of such research, making their linguistic expert evaluation essential for codifying the language of economic science. The Department has launched the course The Language Brand of a Modern Professional to improve the qualifications of university faculty and anyone interested in refining their knowledge of the modern literary standard.
In line with European educational standards, the Department prioritizes improving teaching methods and tools, developing instructional materials to support students in their studies, and implementing innovative methodologies to enhance the quality of linguistic and pedagogical discourse. Thus, maintaining high-quality performance across all aspects of the Department's work, consistent with KNEU's status as a leading center of economic science in Ukraine, remains one of the most significant factors shaping the university's reputation.
