International Trade

  This programme was established in 2005 as a result of many years of the co-operation between the Faculty and the Trade Policy and Law Centre of the Karlton University and Ottawa University (Canada) within the scope of the interstate Ukrainian/Canadian programme of technical assistance with Ukraine's accession to the World Trade Organisation. This programme has been mastered by almost 350 students.

Key specific features and competitive advantages of the programme:

  • this is the first and (for the time being) only specialised master programme in international trade;
  • it covers all levels of the international trade and economic activities (from the corporate level to the global level);
  • it is characterised by the balanced approach toward the development of competencies of specialists: the development and the implementation of a country's trade policy, the application of forms and methods of the commercial diplomacy, the conclusion of international commercial contracts, the tax and tariff regulations and the management of international marketing activities;
  • it is based upon the application of modern rules, mechanisms and tools of key institutes regulating the international trade: the World Trade Organisation, the UN Conference on Trade, the World Customs Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, etc.;
  • it has professional teachers properly trained at specialised certified programmes in Canada, Switzerland, the South Korea and Belgium.

Professional focus of special disciplines: the programme participants master the following professional competencies:

  • the monitoring and the analysis of the international trade and marketing environment;
  • the strategic and tactical planning, and the substantiation of the development of the trade and marketing activities;
  • the organisation of the trade and marketing activities;
  • the control over the implementation of the trade policy, the performance of trade transactions, the attainment of objectives of the international marketing strategy;
  • the adjustment of directions, methods, mechanisms, technologies and instruments of international trade and marketing activities.

Interdisciplinary Training: "Strategies and tactics of inter-state trade and economics negotiations". The training course is focused on generating a suite of skills, qualifications and specialist competencies in respect of holding bilateral and multilateral interstate trade and economic negotiations on the basis of the activity-based approach to the learning, first of all, using the example of the negotiation process within the scope of the multilateral trade system of the WTO, as well as a set of analytical, creative and communication skills that will ensure the appropriate competitiveness of the graduate at the labour market.

Areas of master research:

  • trade policy: tools, mechanisms, cases, specific areas;
  • the development of multilateral, regional and bilateral trade and economic relations;
  • forms and methods of commercial diplomacy and the support to the international trade and marketing activities;
  • trade and marketing activities of companies (exporters, importers, intermediaries, multinationals);
  • the management of international marketing activities.

The major bases for the internship include: the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the Ministry of Industrial Policy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Derzhzovnishinform; export-oriented domestic enterprises; international intermediaries and importers; branches of foreign companies in Ukraine; chambers of commerce and industry, associations of manufacturers and exporters; foundations and projects.

  • analysis, experts and researchers.
